Florida Keys - Monroe County Criminal Lawyers
The Florida Keys are made up of about 1,700 islands in the southeastern United States. The islands are located in the Florida straits with the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west. The city of Key West is the county seat for Monroe County. The Florida Keys were discovered and chartered by Ponce de Leon.
For many years, the Florida Keys were only accessible by water. To make the Florida Keys accessible by land, Henry Flagler constructed the Overseas Railway, in the early 20th century. In the 1970's, the Florida Keys became a haven for drug smuggling (i.e., cocaine trafficking and marijuana trafficking). During the 1980, state and federal law enforcement curtailed the amount of drug trafficking occurring in the Florida Keys and Monroe County. Today, the Florida Keys are a booming tourist location, especially Key West.
The 16th Judicial Circuit serves the citizens of the Florida Keys and Monroe County. There are three courthouses that service the Florida Keys and Monroe County.
